The Mystery of the 192.168.l.1.1 Typo
192.168.l.1.1 has become a search term with no home and there is a distinct reason why this IP address type trends often in search, when it should really be 192.168.1.1 instead.
The absolute most common IP address configured to your local home router is 192.168.1.1. Other IP addresses you will find in default configurations are 192.168.0.1 and 10.0.0.1. But nothing comes close to 192.168.1.1 in usage yet.
So if 192.168.1.1 is the most popular default router IP address, why does 192.168.l.1.1 or 192.168.l.1 trend as a search term? The answer is fairly simply.
The mystery is in those router owners who are not so tech-savvy. What happens is they start searching Google for answers on how to configure their router or change default settings or they have entered 192.168.l.1.1 in their web browser bar, which redirects them to a Google search because it doesn't exist.
A problem is introduced when they are not certain if they are looking at a "l" or a "1" in the string of numbers, so they add both. What they are looking for in reality is simply 192.168.1.1 so they can access the admin interface of their router.
"l" instead of "i" is used more often because on they keyboard when you are typing, "i" obviously does not look like a "1" because of the "." sitting on top. The next best key on the keyboard that favors the "1" is the letter "l" instead.
To be clear, entering the full url of http://192.168.1.1/ in the web browser bar will take most people who need to change settings in their admin interface where they need to go.
But they unknowingly search for 192.168.l.1.1 or 192.168.l.1 because they are not very technical and they don't know if the last few characters they are looking at is a "l" or a "1" and so both characters make it to the search.
If you type 192.168.l.1.1 or 192.168.l.1 in the web browser bar with the intentions of gaining access to the router admin area, you wind up doing a Google search more likely. That's just the way most web browsers are designed to fall-back to a default search.
Try typing the proper set of characters, which is 192.168.1.1 with or without the http:// in front. It will take you where you need to go!
